As the internet social turf wars continue to mature, the land grab is becoming much better understood. With a few companies controlling 95 percent of the social data, the internet is more closed and much more controlled than ever before.

The term (and concept behind) big data has been thrown around a lot over the past 15 months. What I’m referring to here is user data, primarily from social businesses that can be leveraged to build other apps and businesses if done within the confines of a company API.

A few basic examples. Let’s take Facebook: A developer, product architect, entrepreneur, etc. may want to analyze names, pictures or shares. How about Snapchat: shares or number of sent items. Instagram: users, hearts or comments. Tesla: car location, energy consumption, last charge. The list goes on and on. The modern web has been built on an open data exchange.

It seems like barely a day goes by without reports of yet another large scale loss or theft of personal data. In fact statistics are quite clear on the matter – data breaches are becoming bigger and more frequent.

Perhaps this is inevitable. The total volume of personal data we generate and store is increasing exponentially as more and more aspects of our lives become digital and connected. So it follows that with more data floating about, more of it will be stolen or lost.

From a business point of view this is significant. According to a recent study, the cost to a business of dealing with an “average” data breach is now $4 million – representing around $158 for every lost record.

Global Study Reveals 90 Percent of Companies Benefit from Big Data in Today’s Application Economy

The results of a global study commissioned by CA Technologies has revealed Enterprise Big Data strategies are delivering key benefits to organizations despite noted challenges in implementation. Most notably, nine in 10 organizations are experiencing or anticipate seeing, more effective targeted marketing and selling campaigns. Additionally, 88 percent see or anticipate increased revenue. These benefits are impressive despite 92 percent of respondents citing obstacles to their Big Data projects.

According to the study, the top five major obstacles to overcome for successful big data project implementation include: insufficient existing infrastructure (32 percent), organizational complexity (27 percent), security/compliance concerns (26 percent), lack of budget/resources (25 percent), and a lack of visibility into information and processes (25 percent).
